HOME » The Chiltern Observatory

The Chiltern Observatory was built between 1990-1996 for the benefit of all our members & guests and Woodrow High House (part of the London Federation for Young People).

The Observatory houses a Meade 10-inch LX200 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope which is permanently mounted on a concrete pier and equatorial MegaWedge.

The Chiltern Observatory

Use of the Society's Observatory

The Society's observatory is available for members and non-members to use whenever clear skies permit.

The Society has a number of "night operators" who are experienced telescope users who will open the observatory and help members to use the telescope. Observing takes place all year round whenever the weather permits it.

Members' usage

Members should consult the latest Cygnus newsletter for a list of night observers, their telephone numbers and the observatory telephone number for contact details. Members should also ensure their email address is given to the Society so that observing evening announcements can be sent to them.

Non-members' usage

The observatory is also available for non-members to use. We actively encourage local educational groups such as schools, scouts, guides etc. to contact us to arrange an observing evening so that we can introduce you to the wonders of the night sky. We are happy to provide either a classroom based slide show introduction to astronomy and the night sky or (preferably!) a hands-on session in the observatory on a clear evening.

The observatory can hold approximately 6 people at a time, but we are able to accomodate larger groups outside the observatory and rotate people through. Multiple telescopes are also available.

If your organisation is interested in visiting our facility, please contact us as far in advance as possible to make arrangements. We are always pleased to hear from you. You can contact us via email or the Society's snail mail address.
