HOME » Observing Projects

Wycombe Astronomical Society encourages members to observe the night sky regularly either using their own telescope or the Society's equipment.

The Society runs two observing projects to suit beginners and intermediate observers. The WAS binocular 25 is a project that beginners can follow to learn how to observe the Moon, planets, constellations bright deep sky objects and double stars. All objects can be found with binoculars. The WAS 50 project builds on the binocular 25. It contains objects that require a telescope to find. Members can use their own telescope or the Society's 10-inch schmidt-cassegrain instrument.

Members can receive a certificate upon successful completion of a project. Non-members are welcome to follow the programmes as well - all the information you need is available below. Good luck and clear skies!

Get outside and observe at WAS Practical Evenings!

In 2003 the Society introduced Beginner's Evenings which were designed to support those newer members who were keen to understand more about the wonders of the sky above us. These evenings were originally set up as a course of practical observation and short lectures to enable newcomers and those not so new to this fascinating hobby, to understand the basics of observing and using telescopes and to maximise the pleasures of skywatching.

These evenings have now developed into very successful Practical Astronomy monthly meetings held on the first Thursday of the month. These evenings allow all WAS members to enjoy an excellent social evening involving an initial short talk covering various aspects of the practical side of our hobby followed by (weather permitting) group practical observing sessions using the society telescope and members' own scopes.

These sessions complement the main WAS meetings by offering members the opportunity to discuss the practical side of our hobby and gain support from more experienced sky watchers. Those of you who have attended the Telescope Evenings or Meteor Watches already know how rewarding and motivational group observing can be.

The Practical Astronomy evenings are held in the Frankie Vaughan Studio at Woodrow High House starting at 8.00pm. The talks are followed by practical observation in the grounds near the observatory when weather permits. There is a small charge of £2.00 per session to cover the cost of hiring the Studio. Please come dressed to observe. Practical evening photos: (click to enlarge)
