NGC891 - (Edge on galaxy)

Another good image Ben. This is a really nice result with a Canon 450D. I usually see images like these using a CCD camera instead. It gives me hope!

Nice one Ben. Plenty of detail.
You might want to try NCG7331, a nice spiral that's not so edge on and visible now.
Chris

Some more Virgo galaxies. Taken with a 80mm refractor, 0.8 focal reducer and Canon EOS 450. 25 x 40 sec exps stacked in DSStacker. They are rather small so I have labelled them – hope I’ve got them right. David
From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Tue 13 Apr 2010 03:27:02 AM CDT
As you say a lot of galaxies. Some of them just look like stars. A nice collection David. Do you use bulb on the Canon? Are some of the exposures dark frames?

Jan

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Tue 13 Apr 2010 10:50:58 AM CDT
I’ve given up using dark frames Jan. They don’t seem seem to make much difference. The camera was set to ‘bulb’ and the exposures made using a Hahnel Gigo Pro wireless remote control. A nice gadget that works at a distance of up to 100m.

Nice one Alistair, I can see colour in my future..
Was there a previous version with a magenta cast?
Chris

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Mon 12 Apr 2010 01:49:01 AM CDT
Hi Chris. This is my third go at M51 - previous ones not much good and I can't remember if I posted them. But "magenta cast" sounds plausible! Recently deleted a lot from the gallery because it wasn't my better stuff and it had been there long enough.

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Mon 12 Apr 2010 01:56:34 AM CDT
Such long exposures are vastly more resilient to noise appearing in the processing. Which is stating the obvious, but long nights of patience in the image acquisition has its rewards. Also got several hours of M101 and M63 this week. A

I didn't spend much time on this and am sure I can get more out of it. I'll have another go when I get back to UK. A

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Tue 13 Apr 2010 03:38:29 AM CDT
What a lovely image Alistair. Please can you explain the settings in more detail for me as I don't understand some of it. 05.12.5" RC,STL11000M please? Is this taken with a new piece of kit? i.e. Richey Cretien 'scope.

Sorry should have signed off the last post with my name.

Hi Jan, this is 5 hours of total exposure time over two nights, 2010.04.04 and 2010.04.05. Sub-exposures were 10mins each: 16L 4R 5G 5B unbinned. Plus darks, bias and flats.

Camera is SBIG STL11000M 11Mp monochrome operating at -35C. Scope is RCOS 12.5inch f/9 RC mounted on AP GTO1200. Image processed in MaximDL and Photoshop.

Have just seen your first attempt with the new CCD. It is a nice image. I am sure you are very pleased with the result, and there will be lots more to come.

NGC 2403. Canon EOS 450 with William Optics 80mm refractor. David
From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Tue 09 Mar 2010 02:42:58 AM CST
Please can you give more details on camera settings, number of frames, exposure times and processing of images if any. I would like to know how you arrived at the result. A nice image. Jan

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Wed 10 Mar 2010 02:57:34 PM CST
I took about 40, 30" exps at ISO 1600 (no dark frames), plus a few at 1 and 2 minutes to record fainter detail. The jpeg images were then stacked in Deep Sky Stacker. The result was then tweaked in Photoshop (Curves, noise reduction and unsharp mask)

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Thu 30 Oct 2008 01:36:55 AM CDT
David this is great if it was taken in our light pollution - is it filtered (why monochrome?). Exposure details? Fast aperture? Alistair

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Fri 31 Oct 2008 05:04:01 AM CDT
Alistair. Usual Amersham light pollution. No filter but target at zenith. F5.6, ASA 1600, Exps 30, 60 & 120 secs stacked together in DSS. After tweaking in PSP and PS 6 variable colour casts apparent so saturation reduced. David

A nice image David. Did you use your Williams Optics 80mm'scope for this one?

Jan

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Fri 10 Oct 2008 05:17:55 PM CDT
Hi Jan. There was no telescope involved, just the camera and its zoom lens connected directly with a pan and tilt head to my polar aligned mount. David

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Wed 01 Oct 2008 06:21:04 AM CDT
Is this like using a Hartmann mask? I have never heard of a Bahnitov mask. What is the star that you have focussed on?

Jan

Jan

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Wed 01 Oct 2008 11:49:43 AM CDT
Yes, it's like a Hartmann mask but more complex to make. I'll bring one along on Thursday. You focus by getting the central spike between the two angled ones.
Chris

Nice images Sandy!
Are you mounted Alt Az?
Chris

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Tue 10 Jun 2008 02:34:45 AM CDT
Thanks, Chris. Yes Alt-Az mount, though thinking of getting a wedge. Mounting the scope weighing 59 lbs each time seems daunting. Sandy

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Tue 10 Jun 2008 04:54:08 PM CDT
Getting the scope on a wedge is more difficult :-) Not only do you need to lift it but you have to tilt it.
Chris

That's a good image Sandy; can you say something about how you acquired and processed it please. Things like the type of scope, type of imager (DSI of some sort I suppose), exposure, number of frames and processing. - Chris

That is a very nice image Sandy.

That's a very nice image David, It shows how large M31 is is you need to use a focal reducer with a DSLR.
Chris

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Sun 18 Nov 2007 04:00:45 AM CST
Yes the galaxy filled almost the whole frame, just a bit trimmed from right and bottom for the final image. Good luck with your new 80mm refractor. David

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Thu 27 Dec 2007 01:39:41 PM CST
I particularly like this one. To get 2 minute exposures on the Canon 400D did you use "bulb"?

Jan

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Thu 27 Dec 2007 01:41:01 PM CST
Me again! I meant to ask what is an ALP filter please.

Jan

A nice picture David. Are you using bulb to get a 2 minute exposure? I have not tried bulb, and have not gone beyond 30 second exposures.

From: Wycombe Astronomical Society Members  Tue 30 Oct 2007 06:19:02 PM CDT
Yes I use the bulb setting with a remote release (bought from Chesham photographic). Also a large bag clip to hold the button down for the 2 min exposures. David

I have taken to viewing the image gallery more often recently, and came across this picture. I thought it was really lovely, and showed M45 so clearly.

I took another look and realised that Taurus was also a good view in the upper right corner.

From: Jan  Wed 07 Feb 2007 10:12:57 AM CST
Another good picture. I wonder if you took this with your new IS lens. Did you have to use a tripod?

From: David  Thu 08 Feb 2007 05:22:47 AM CST
This was taken with the EOS 400 connected directly to the telescope using a T-ring adaptor and extension tube.
